What Is the One Thing You Can Do Now?

I’ve been reading a great book called The One Thing by Gary Keller. He says that most people trying to succeed do too much, get nowhere, feel overwhelmed and give up on their dreams because they try to do everything.

He explains that going small is the answer. “Going small is ignoring all the things you could do and doing what you should do. It’s recognizing that not all things matter equally and finding the things that matter most. It’s realizing that extraordinary results are directly determined by how narrow you can make your focus.”

He uses a domino metaphor to explain his point. “In 1983, Lorne Whitehead discovered that not only could dominos topple many things, they could also topple bigger things. He described how a single domino is capable of bringing down another domino that is actually 50% larger”.

If you don’t narrow your focus you’ll end up with overloaded calendars, to-do lists as long as your arm, things falling through the cracks, unhappy clients, high stress, long hours and no life. This might hit a nerve for you because it’s tax time. I don’t think I’ll ever forget how bad that felt when I was growing my business.
