When I was travelling to Hobart for the last seminar in the 7 Secrets of Growing Your Bookkeeping Business roadshow I stuffed up. My biggest fear was that I would miss the plane so I planned everything very carefully. Our wonderful p.a. Cristina, had checked me in, I booked a taxi the night before and set the alarm so that was ready in time. Everything went perfectly until I got to the airport.

I arrived at 6.30am thinking I had an hour to spare and went to the bag drop. I scanned the boarding pass and was surprised to see a message saying that the flight had closed. I thought they had made a mistake until I looked carefully at the boarding pass and realised that I was the one who made the mistake and boarding was at 6.40am not 7.40am! To cut a long story short I was able to book a flight an hour later with Jetstar and made it to the venue with 5 minutes to spare!

I’m very experienced at beating myself up. I called Pete Cook while waiting for the plane to apologise and he could tell that I was upset and he said “I’m not getting off the phone until you forgive yourself.” He left me no other choice or I would have missed the next flight! So I did.

When you are reflecting on what you have achieved this year, you may also be beating yourself up about mistakes you made along the way or goals you didn’t reach. Before the year has ended forgive yourself. Learn from your mistakes, set your goals for the new year and celebrate what you have achieved.

Happy New Year everyone!
