I had very little confidence when I made the decision to start my bookkeeping business. All I had was the encouragement from family and friends and (hopefully) enough experience so that I didn’t make a complete mess of everything! That was enough to take the first step in faith. To make the transition from employee to self-employed a little easier, I only engaged clients that I could work on from home and I focused on one accounting package.

Working from home meant that I targeted micro clients like tradies, which were usually less complicated than larger companies and a good place to develop my skills. Although I didn’t charge clients if I needed to research, it was less stressful doing it at home without the client looking over my shoulder. Also because I had school-aged children I was able to fit the work around them. Perfect for a working mum.

Choosing to specialise in one accounting package meant that I could concentrate on becoming an expert in that software. I had limited time and needed to focus on what was really important. As my business grew I developed skills in other software, however I still only engage clients who are using either MYOB, RA or Xero and say no to clients using any other accounting packages.

Over time, as I broadened my bookkeeping skills, my confidence grew. As my confidence grew I attracted more clients, as my client base grew so did my confidence (can you see a pattern here?). But what it took was that first step. I was reminded of this part of my journey when I got an email today from a bookkeeper who announced she’s taken the first step and feels terrified and excited at the same time!
